Hockey gets back its lost spirit in city schools, courtesy Chak De India

WHEN 70 students from Alphonsa High School, Kalewadi accompanied by their sports coach Shridharan Thamba went to watch Chak De India last week, little did they know that the move would result in such a positive change in their own school’s sport scene. After a gap of three years, the school has now revived the women’s hockey team with as many as 35 entries already in. “We had started the team five years ago but after two years we had to stop it because there was very little response. Post the movie, the girls got so inspired that they decided to get enrolled,” says Thamba, who has been a national umpire and has also been a coach for the Maharashtra team for five years. “This is the first time a movie has been made on the subject and I am so happy with its impact,” he adds.
